GSRD*-affirmative supervision of psychotherapy with Daniel Bak (2 Day event)

*GSRD stands for Gender, Sex & Relationship Diversities. GSRD encompasses the acronym LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans) and extends it, incorporating also, for example, identities and practices of BDSM/Kink and various forms of consensual and ethical non-monogamy (Davies & Neves, 2023).

The GSRD-affirmative supervision of psychotherapy programme is designed to provide important learning and skills to psychotherapy practitioners, especially supervisors, from any theoretical modality.

GSRD people have specific needs in psychotherapy and supervision. Ideally, a GSRD-knowledgeable therapist/supervisor is able to combine the following core components of: (1) practicing a commitment to social justice, (2) demonstrating cultural humility and cultural competence, (3) understanding the specific adverse effects of oppression, (4) being trauma, grief, and shame informed, (5), knowing contemporary sexology, (6) integrating core GSRD theories, and (7) fostering joy (Davies & Neves, 2023).

A model of supervision is needed, that would be able to accommodate this complexity.

The workshop offers The Relational Matrix Model (RMM) of supervision as a working frame (Chidiac et al., 2017). The model was developed by Gestalt practitioners. However, as the RMM’s focus is on the specific modes of clinical thinking and quality of the supervisory

relationship, it can be considered a meta-model of supervision, applicable with any theoretical approach in psychotherapy. The RMM is immensely contextual and relational, what in the authorial elaboration by a workshop presenter (Bak, 2023), makes it a key methodology in GSRD-affirmative supervision.

There are two workshop days.

Day 1 explores:

-  GSRD identities

-  Specific needs of GSRDs in psychotherapy and supervision

-  Core components of GSRD Therapy (and supervision) (Davies & Neves, 2023)

-  The relational approach in psychotherapy and supervision

-  The RMM (Chidiac et al., 2017)

-  The RMM as a GSRD-affirmative supervisory tool (Bak, 2023)

Day 2 is delivered in a form of group supervision. The RMM is used as a main reference.

Day 1 is open to psychotherapists and psychotherapy students* of various theoretical modalities, with particular reference to Gestalt practitioners.

*Importantly, as solid fundamentals of psychotherapy are needed to fully benefit from the workshop, this event is offered to students who completed at least the 2nd year of a psychotherapy training (4-year long training is assumed).

Day 2 is open to professionals who work as supervisors of psychotherapy. This workshop includes two days, that are designed to complement each other. Day 2 is offered only to participants who attended Day 1. A group on Day 2 will include no more than eight participants (plus a trainer-supervisor).

Daniel Bak, PhD (He/His) – A Gestalt psychotherapist (EAGT-accredited) and relational supervisor (Relational Change, UK). He specialises in working with GSRDs. A faculty member of Pink Therapy, UK and Nederlandse Stichting Gestalt, the Netherlands. A member of Research Council at the Centre for Social Queer Studies, University of Warsaw. He lives and works in Warsaw, Poland.
